This occupation group covers marine transport professionals not elsewhere classified. Occupations in this group include: marine certification and surveillance manager, marine safety officer and ship's purser.

Controls and directs shipping operations to ensure the safe and efficient loading and transport of cargo and passengers; ensures compliance with regulations pertaining to safety at sea and protection of the marine environment.

• Constantly works indoors and outdoors on and in a boat.

• Works constantly on uneven terrain.

• Works in all weather conditions.

• Work areas may be cold, hot, dirty or wet. Indoor work areas are likely to beadequately heated and ventilated.

• Utilises protective equipment and clothing as required.

• Light to heavy physical demand.
• Sitting may be required when researching regulations and preparing reports.
• Stands and walks constantly when directing shipping operations.
• Stretching up and across may be required when inspecting that cargo has been loaded properly.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is unlikely to be a significant requirement of this job for an MCSM but will be required frequently for a purser.
• Bending, squatting or crouching may be required when inspecting that cargo has been loaded properly.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements may be required.
• Driving is not required.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2).
• At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing is required.

NOTE: some roles within this unit group are at ANZSCO Skill Level 1.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
