Navigates and controls the safe operation of a ship and supervises and coordinates the activities of deck crew.

Navigates a ship by supervising the ship's course and speed according to pre-determined passage plans and safety procedures.

• Constantly works indoors on a ship’s bridge.
• Works constantly on uneven terrain.
• Works in all, including extreme, weather conditions.
• Work areas are likely to be adequately heated and ventilated.
• Utilises protective equipment and clothing as required.

• Light to medium physical demand.
• Sits or stands constantly at a ship’s navigational controls.
• Walks occasionally to check maps, weather details and to confer with other crew members.
• Stretching up and across is unlikely to be a significant requirement of this job.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling may be required but is unlikely to exceed a light physical demand.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant component of the job.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements may be required to operate navigational equipment, radios and computers.
• Driving a car is not required although operation of a vessel is.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing is required.

  NOTE: some roles within this unit group are at ANZSCO Skill Level 1.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
