Controls and manages the operations of a ship or boat.

Ensures compliance with regulations pertaining to safety at sea and protection of the marine environment; directs the activities of the deck crew for navigational support tasks, berthing and unberthing, maintenance, cleaning and painting of superstructures, and repair and replacement of defective deck gear and equipment.

• Constantly works indoors and outdoors on and in a ship.
• Works constantly on uneven terrain.
• Works in all, including extreme, weather conditions.
• Work areas may be cold, hot, dirty, wet or adequately heated and ventilated.\
• Utilises protective equipment and clothing as required.

• Light to medium physical demand.
• Sitting may be required when researching regulations, planning journeys or inspecting reports.
• Stands and walks constantly when directing crew.
• Stretching up and across is unlikely to be a significant requirement of this job.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is unlikely to be a significant requirement of this job.
• Bending, squatting or crouching may be required occasionally when carrying out inspections
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements may be required to operate navigational equipment, radios and computers.
• Driving a car is not required.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing is required.

  NOTE: some roles within this unit group are at ANZSCO Skill Level 1.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
