Controls and manages the operation and maintenance of a ship's plant and equipment.

Plans, controls and coordinates the operational and maintenance requirements of a ship's propulsion and domestic plant and equipment; operates plant and equipment and performs routine maintenance on ship's systems including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, steam generating, and fire prevention and control systems.

• Constantly works indoors in the bowels of a ship.
• Works in hot, noisy and at times dirty
• Utilises protective equipment and clothing as required.

• Up to a very heavy physical demand.
• Sitting is not required.
• Stands and walks constantly when carrying out maintenance requirements.
• Stretching up and across is likely to be required when undertaking certain maintenance activities.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is frequently required in the form of tools and parts.
• Bending, squatting or crouching may be required when carrying out inspections of machinery and to facilitate maintenance activities.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when operating hand tools and machinery.
• Driving is not required.
• Mental skills necessary include mechanical knowledge and communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing is required.

  NOTE: some roles within this unit group are at ANZSCO Skill Level 1.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
