Controls a fishing vessel and fishing operations to catch and preserve fish, crustacea and molluscs.

• Directs fishing operations by using knowledge about the species sought, fishing areas, seasons and the capabilities of the vessel and crew; directs crew in catching fish, molluscs and crustacea at varying depths using nets, lines, poles, pots and traps.

• Constantly works outdoors on fishing boats.

• Occasionally works indoors when working below deck or at the helm of the boat.

• Works in cold, wet, hot and smelly workspaces.

• Works in all, including extreme, weather conditions.

• Utilises protective equipment and clothing as required.

• Up to a heavy physical demand.
• May sit when controlling the vessel.
• Stands and walks frequently to constantly when directing fishing operations.
• Stretching up and across is likely to be required frequently when undertaking certain fishing operations.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is frequently required. Bending, squatting or crouching may be required when carrying out inspections of catch.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when operating boat controls, navigation systems, haulage systems, radios and computers.
• Operation of a fishing vessel is required.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, planning, and organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing is required.

NOTE: some roles within this unit group are at ANZSCO Skill Level 1.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
