Assesses whether patent applications provide an adequate technical description of the invention; assess whether the patent rights sought are justified and match the invention's technical description; searches online databases to discover similar patents held in New Zealand and overseas; assesses whether the advances claimed for the invention are new; reports their findings to the patent applicant or the applicant's legal representative.

• Works indoors in offices and meeting rooms.
• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained offices.

• Frequently sits at an office desk/computer workstation or in meetings.
• Stands and walks about the office and/or organisation occasionally to attend meetings, collect data and carrying out testing.
• Stretching bending, twisting, climbing and lifting is not a significant component of the job.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant component of the job.
• Repetitive movements of the hands and fingers are likely on an occasional to frequent due to the operation of a keyboard and mouse, phones and writing instruments.
• Driving is not a significant component of the job.
• Use of hand-held objects and electronic equipment is frequent to occasional and will involve the use of writing tools, telephones, faxes, computers, photocopiers, scanners, calculators and other general office equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, listening, organisational, problem-solving, planning and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration or licensing may be required.
