Provides information and advice to potential migrants, prepares and lodges visa applications, and acts as an intermediary to legally represent clients during visa processing and before review bodies. Liaises with legal professionals in relation to judicial review matters.

• Provides information about immigration laws, policies and procedures; answers written and phone queries; reads, checks and decides on applications for residency or entry into New Zealand; interviews applicants; explains decisions to applicants; issues permits and visas; enforces immigration laws; may investigates breaches of immigration law; may advise on immigration policies and operations.

• Works indoors in offices and meeting rooms within the Department of Immigration, consultancies and embassies.

• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained offices.

• Sedentary physical demand.

• There is frequent sitting at desks and computer workstations in order to analyse and interpret data.

• Occasionally stands, walks and moves from office to office and to attend interviews.

• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer keyboard, calculator or when hand writing.

• Driving may be required but is not a significant component of the job.

• Mental skills necessary include verbal and written communication, research, data collection, analytical, policy development and interpretation, computing, report writing, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• Registration or licensing is required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
