Plans and organises a gallery or museum collection by drafting collection policies and arranging acquisitions of pieces.

• Plans and organises the acquisition and display of material; arranges the layout and lighting of historical, scientific or art displays; researches items in displays and produces publications, delivers public lecturers and initiates exhibitions; identifies and classifies specimens and objects, and arranges restoration work; examines items and arranges examinations to determine condition and authenticity; manages organisations' central records systems;

• Works indoors in offices, work rooms or storage areas within public or private art galleries or museums.
• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated, and clean workspaces.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Frequently sits to plan or oversee acquisition of works, promotion, administration, financial management, staff management or to plan and design exhibitions. May also work with computerised classification and data research systems.
• Frequently stands and walks about the exhibition or storage spaces while supervising the display, preparation or repair of exhibitions.
• Occasional bending, squatting or crouching may be required when working with some exhibits.
• Occasional lifting, carrying or pulling may be required within a sedentary to light physical range.
• Occasional stretching, climbing and twisting may be needed when moving, hanging or re-arranging exhibits although specialised equipment may be available.
• Frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer for data entry and data processing or preparing exhibits.
• Mental skills necessary include creative, administrative, practical, computing, archival, cataloguing, research, evaluation, organisational, decision making and communication capabilities.

• Most jobs require a bachelor degree or higher qualification. At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
