This occupation group covers journalists and other writers not elsewhere classified. Occupations in this group include blogger, critic, editorial assistant, vlogger and photo journalist.

Makes decisions about the specific content of publications in conjunction with other editors and in accordance with editorial policies and guidelines; reviews copy for publication to ensure conformity with accepted rules of grammar, style and format, coherence of story, and accuracy, legality and probity of content; collects and analyses facts about events from interviews and printed matter; writes blogs for photos; researches and writes essays; critically discusses daily news topics in the editorial columns of newspapers and reviews books, films and plays.

• Works indoors in offices attached to newsrooms or magazine offices.
• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated spaces.

• Sedentary physical demand. Frequently sits when researching or preparing material, carrying out interviews and writing background reports to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
• Occasionally stands and walks about when undertaking research or interviews.
• Stretching up and reaching across is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling is not a significant requirement.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Lifting, carrying and holding is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Repetitive movements with hands may be required in completing written works by hand or on the computer.
• Driving is likely to be required occasionally/or frequently to undertake research or hold interviews.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment may include writing tools, shorthand notebook, dictaphone, computers, telephones, faxes, emails and other record-keeping/office equipment, as well as on-line and hard copy database/library for researching background to story.
• Mental skills necessary include writing, computing, communication, research and organisation.

A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
