Conceptualises and designs prototypes and details for the manufacture of jewellery and objects for personal adornment, such as watches and spectacles, homeware and other objects, such as trophies and silverware, using metals, precious stones, plastics, engraving, casting and fabrication, to develop designs for mass or batch production or one-off commissions.

• Determines the objectives and constraints of the design brief by consulting with clients and stakeholders; undertakes product research and analyses functional, commercial, cultural and aesthetic requirements; formulates design concepts for jewellery; prepares sketches, diagrams, illustrations, plans, samples and models to communicate design concepts; negotiates design solutions with clients, management, and sales and manufacturing staff; selects, specifies and recommends functional and aesthetic materials, production methods and finishes for manufacture; details and documents the selected design for production; prepares and commissions prototypes and samples; supervises the preparation of patterns, programmes and tooling, and the manufacture process.

• Works indoors in studios, workrooms, and factories.

• Works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces.

• Protective equipment should be utilised where possible.

• Sedentary physical demand. Frequently sits when researching or preparing material, carrying out interviews and writing background reports to ensure accuracy and authenticity.

• Occasionally stands and walks about when undertaking research or interviews.

• Stretching up and reaching across is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling is not a significant requirement.

• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Lifting, carrying and holding is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Repetitive movements with hands may be required in completing written works by hand or on the computer.

• Driving is likely to be required occasionally/or frequently to undertake research or hold interviews.

• Use of hand-held objects and equipment may include writing tools, shorthand notebook, dictaphone, computers, telephones, faxes, emails and other record-keeping/office equipment, as well as on-line and hard copy database/library for researching background to story.

• Mental skills necessary include writing, computing, communication, research and organisation.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
