Collects and analyses facts about newsworthy events from interviews, printed matter, investigations and observations; writes news reports, commentaries, articles and feature stories for newspapers, magazines, and journals on topics of public interest.

• Works indoors in newsrooms or magazine offices and occasionally outdoors when undertaking research and interviewing the public.
• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated spaces when in newsrooms, but may work in all types of weather conditions and be in dangerous and unpleasant or difficult situations when reporting from field locations.

• Sedentary physical demand. Frequently sits when researching or preparing material, interviewing members of the public and writing background reports to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
• Occasionally stands and walks about when undertaking research or interviewing the public.
• Stretching up and reaching across is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling may be required in some outdoor environments such as in storms or war torn areas.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Lifting, carrying and holding is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Repetitive movements with hands may be required in completing written works by hand or on the computer.
• Driving is likely to be required occasionally to frequently to attend scenes, carry out interviews or research.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment may include writing tools, shorthand notebook, dictaphone, computers, telephones, faxes, emails and other record-keeping/office equipment, as well as on-line and hard copy database/library for researching background to story.
• Mental skills necessary include writing, computing, communication, research and organisation.

A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
