Entertains by playing one or more musical instruments.

• Studies and rehearses repertoire and musical scores prior to performances; plays music in recitals, as an accompanist, or as a member of an orchestra, band or other musical group, from score and by memory; performs music and songs according to interpretation, direction and style of presentation, using highly developed aural skills to reproduce music.

• Works indoors in music studios, rooms or in a wide range of performance venues such as concert halls, clubs or outdoors venues.

• Employees will usually be sheltered from adverse weather if outdoors.

• Works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces when indoors.

• Light to medium physical demand. Levels of physical demand will however, depend upon the type of instrument being played and the type of performance.

• Frequently sits or stands depending upon musical instrument.

• Orchestral musicians are likely to sit for extended periods; alternatively guitarists are likely to stand throughout performances. Occasional walking about studios or concert venues may be required to set up the stage and/or equipment.

• Stretching up and reaching across is unlikely although some rock and other musicians are likely to make sweeping and/or vigorous arm movements.

• Bending is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Squatting, crouching and kneeling may be required when setting up certain instruments.

• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant requirement of the job.

• Lifting, carrying and holding are typically not beyond a medium demand level, but will vary depending on the type of instrument.

• Repetitive movements with hands are likely to be constant for musicians whilst performing or practicing.

• Driving may be required but is not a significant feature of the job.

• Use of hand-held objects and equipment will be frequent and include musical instruments, a synthesizer, lighting and sound equipment, music stands and a stage wardrobe or uniform, depending upon the type of band or performance.

• Mental skills necessary include creative, musical ability and knowledge, communication, planning, organisational and performance/expressive skills.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
