Conducts choirs, orchestras, bands, ensembles, opera companies and musical performances.

• Auditions and selects musicians and singers; selects music for performances and assigns instrumental parts to musicians; directs musical groups at rehearsals and performances to achieve desired effects such as tonal and harmonic balance, rhythm and tempo.

• Works indoors in music studios, theatres, concert halls and some outdoor locations.

• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces when indoors.

• Sedentary to light physical demand levels.

• Conductors will stand constantly when leading an orchestra and occasionally walk about studio or the concert venue to communicate with musicians and singers.

• Stretching up and reaching across is not a significant feature of the job.

• Conductors are likely to make sweeping and sometimes vigorous arm movements.

• Bending, squatting, crouching and kneeling is not a significant feature of the job.

• Twisting of the body or neck may occur occasionally.

• Lifting, carrying and holding is unlikely to be required beyond a sedentary level.

• Repetitive movements with hands are likely to be required on an occasional basis.

• Driving is not a significant feature of the job

• Use of hand-held objects and equipment will be frequent and may include a baton, a metronome and general office equipment.

• Mental skills necessary include creative, musical ability and knowledge, communication, planning and organisational skills, computing and performance/expressive skills.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
