Provides high level management to support the running of an organisational unit within the New Zealand Defence Forces.

• Establishes administrative and operational procedures by taking account of the organisation's operating environment; makes policy decisions and accepts responsibility for operations, performance of staff, achievement of targets and adherence to budgets, standards and procedures; establishes lines of control and delegates responsibilities to subordinate staff; represents the organisation in dealings with other organisations and the public; controls the collection and interpretation of management information to monitor performance; controls the use of, and accounting for, the assets and facilities of the organisation; prepares budgets and other management plans; prepares reports, authorises the release of information, and handles public relations activities.

• Frequently works indoors in offices and meeting rooms.
• Works outdoors occasionally when monitoring staff and operations.
• Generally works in adequately heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces. Outside situations may be dirty, noisy and dusty.

• This is a light to medium work demand role although there may be frequent standing on parade grounds and active participation in intensive physical training.
• Employees stand and walk occasionally around military facilities.
• Sitting is likely to be required occasionally to frequently.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant component of the job unless participation in training exercises is part of the job.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant component of the job unless participation in training exercises is part of the job.
• There is occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements required when using hand-held objects including pens, telephones and calculators and using a keyboard and mouse.
• Driving may be required occasionally.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with communication, interpersonal, organisational, and financial, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
