The Clinical Director (Midwifery) plans, organises, directs, controls, and co-ordinates the professional and administrative aspects of midwifery programmes and services.

Provides overall direction and management for an organisation’s midwifery programmes and services; develops, implements, and monitors procedures, policies, and standards for midwives and associated administrative staff; coordinates and administers midwifery services; monitors and evaluates resources devoted to the midwifery service; controls administrative operations such as budget planning, report preparation, and expenditure on supplies, equipment, and services; liaises with other funding bodies to review service cooperation and coordination; advises governing bodies about measures to improve midwifery services; monitors and addresses health and safety and liability issues; represents the organisation in negotiations, and at conventions, seminars, public hearings, and forums; and organises selection, training, and supervision of staff.

• Works indoors in hospitals, birthing centres, clinics, and occasionally in homes.
• Generally works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated, and clean, well-maintained and hygienic workspaces.

• Light physical demand.
• Sits during consultations and meetings.
• Stands and walks occasionally.
• Lifting, pulling, or carrying is not typically required.
• Bending, squatting, crouching, stretching, twisting, and reaching are not a significant component of the role.
• Frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are necessary when using a computer or writing.
• Driving will be required to facilitate attendance of appointments out in the community.
• Mental skills necessary include teaching, evaluation, high-level communication, interpersonal, organisational, analytical, time-management, budgeting, decision-making, and computing capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate may be required.
• A Class 1 Driver Licence will be required.
