Plans, organises, directs, controls and co-ordinates the manufacturing activities of a workshop (e.g. mechanical repairs) including physical and human resources.

• Determines, implements and monitors workshop strategies, policies and plans; plans details of workshop activities in terms of output quality and quantity, cost, time available and labour requirements; controls the operation of the workshop and quality procedures through planning of maintenance, designation of operating hours and supply of parts and tools; monitors production output and costs, and adjusts processes and resources to minimise costs; informs other managers about production matters; oversees the acquisition and installation of new plant and equipment; directs research into workshop methods, and recommends and implements initiatives; controls the preparation of workshop records and reports; co-ordinates the implementation of occupational health and safety requirements; directs staff activities and monitors their performance.

• Works indoors either in an office environment or in the workshop area.
• Office areas are likely to be adequately heated, ventilated, clean and well maintained;however workshop areas may be dirty, dusty and noisy. Fumes may also be present in the workshop.

• Sedentary work with frequent sitting in offices to complete work or in meetings.
• Stands and walks frequently around workshop areas.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant component of the job.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant feature of the job.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using hand-held objects/equipment such as pens, calculators, a keyboard and mouse.
• Driving is likely in a mechanical repairs workshop.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
