Plans, organises, controls, co-ordinates and performs farming operations to both grow crops and to breed and raise livestock.

• Plans and co-ordinates the production and marketing of crops and livestock; breeds and raises livestock for the production of meat, wool, skins, milk or eggs, and growing grain, seed crops, vegetables, fruit or nuts; monitoring and maintaining the health and condition of livestock; provides pastures and fodder to maintain appropriate nutritional levels; selects and purchases seed for planting, planning and implementing breeding programmes; directs and oversees general farming activities such as fertilising, and pest and weed control; maintains farm buildings, fences, equipment and water supply systems; organises the sale, purchase and transportation of livestock and produce; maintains and evaluates records of farming activities, monitoring market activity and planning production accordingly; manages business capital, monitoring market activity and planning production accordingly; may select, train and supervise staff and contractors.

• Frequently works outdoors in the farm environment performing and supervising farming tasks on-site but also occasionally works indoors in offices to plan and coordinate tasks and projects. May work in glasshouses depending on the crop and this environment can be hot. Office work areas will frequently be heated, ventilated, clean and well maintained. Outside work will be in all weathers and is likely to often be in a dirty or rugged environment.

• On the farm employees are required to perform light to very heavy work. There is an occasional to frequent requirement for lifting, carrying or pulling up to a very heavy physical demand level.
• Frequent standing and walking required. In the office this is sedentary work with frequent sitting.
• Bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting, climbing is likely to be required on a regular basis when engaged in the physical tasks of farming.
• There is occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements required when using a wide range of hand tools associated with farm work. There is also occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements required when using hand-held objects/equipment in the office.
• Driving is likely to be required occasionally to frequently.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
