Plans, organises, controls, co-ordinates and performs farming, greenhouse and market garden operations to grow vegetables.

• Co-ordinates production and marketing of crops from soil preparation to harvest taking into account environmental and market factors; plants seeds and seedlings and grafts new varieties to root stocks; maintains crop production by cultivating, de-budding and pruning, and maintains optimal growing conditions; conducts market garden operations, such as collecting, storing, grading and packaging produce, and organising the sale, purchase and despatch of produce; directs and oversees general activities such as fertilising and pest and weed control; maintains buildings, fences, equipment and water supply systems; maintains and evaluates records of activities, monitoring market activity, and planning crop preparation and production to meet contract requirements and market demand; manages business capital including budgeting, taxation, debt and loan management; may select, train and supervise staff and contractors.

• Frequently works outdoors performing and supervising market gardening tasks on-site but also occasionally works indoors in offices to plan and coordinate tasks and projects. Some work may occur inside glasshouses and these can be hot/humid environments.
• Office work areas will frequently be heated, ventilated, clean and well maintained. Outside work will be in all weathers and is likely to often be in a dirty or rugged environment.

• At the market garden employees are required to perform light to very heavy work with frequent standing and walking required. In the office this is sedentary work with frequent sitting.
• There is an occasional to frequent requirement for lifting, carrying or pulling up to a very heavy physical demand level.
• Bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting, climbing is required on a regular basis when engaged in the physical tasks of market gardening.
• There is occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements required when using a wide range of hand tools associated with market gardening work. There is also occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements required when using hand-held objects/equipment in the office including pens, calculators and using a keyboard, mouse and customised design software.
• Driving is likely to be required occasionally to frequently.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some cases particular experience and/or on-job training may be needed.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
