Plans, organises, controls, co-ordinates and performs planting, cultivating and harvesting activities to grow flowering and foliage plants.

• Co-ordinates production and marketing of flowers, from soil preparation to harvest taking into account environmental and market factors; plants seeds and seedlings and bulbs, and grafts new varieties to root stocks; maintains crop production by cultivating, de-budding and pruning, and maintains optimal growing conditions; conducts farming operations, such as collecting, storing, grading and packaging produce, and organising the sale, purchase and dispatch of produce; oversees general farming activities such as fertilising and pest and weed control; maintains buildings, fences, equipment and water systems; evaluates records of activities, monitoring market activity, and planning crop preparation and production to meet contract requirements and market demand; manages business capital; may select, train and supervise staff and contractors.

• Frequently works outdoors in the farm or indoors in glasshouses and packhouse performing and supervising farming tasks. Occasionally works indoors in offices to plan and co-ordinate. Outside work may be dirty, wet, cold, hot or dusty depending upon season and weather. Indoor glasshouse work occurs generally in a warm and humid environment. Packhouse work may involve contact with a cold coolstore environment. Offices will frequently be heated, ventilated, clean and well maintained.
• Occasionally to frequently uses horticultural pesticides and fertilisers and various soil mixture additives. Protective clothing and breathing apparatus may be required.

• Light to very heavy work with frequent standing and walking required. In the office this is sedentary work with frequent sitting.
• Occasional to frequent lifting, carrying or pulling is required up to a very heavy physical demand level.
• Bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting, climbing is likely to be required on a regular basis when engaged in the physical tasks of farming.
• Flower growers will spray fertilisers and pesticides on an occasional to frequent basis.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements is required when using a range of hand tools associated with farm work (e.g. secateurs, spades, spraying equipment and various other implements). Also occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are needed for using hand-held objects/equipment in the office including pens and using a keyboard, mouse and customised design software.
• Driving is likely to be required occasionally to frequently.
• Mental skills needed is high cognitive functioning with communication, organisational, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
